Dental Care: What to Expect When Having Your Braces Removed

Dr. Baptiste • March 5, 2019

For many people, braces are a right of passage during your teenage years. You have them on your teeth for what seems like an eternity, until one day it is time to take them off. You have had the braces on for so long that you do not even remember what it feels like to not have them, so the prospect of removing them can sometimes feel a little weird - even if it is exciting. So then what can you expect when it comes time for you to have your braces removed?

The Procedure

The procedure to have your braces removed is fairly straightforward. Your orthodontist will use a set of dental pliers to gently squeeze the brackets off your teeth one at a time. Don't worry, they will not tug on your teeth, so you won't feel any pain. Once all of the brackets and wiring have been removed from your mouth, the orthodontist will then spend some time polishing your teeth to remove any adhesive that the braces may have left behind. When the polishing is finished, you are officially free of braces.

The Retainer

Though you may be excited to show the world your new, beautiful smile, there is still one step left to take after the braces have been removed - the retainer. Your Orlando orthodontistwill take an impression of your teeth using putty so that he/she can make a retainer that will fit snugly in your mouth. Your retainer is used to keep your teeth in place after the braces have been removed, and you will usually be instructed to wear it every night to bed. Once you have been fitted for your retainer, you should be all set to go. All told, your trip to the orthodontic office should last about an hour or so.

What Next?

When you get home, you should be sure to maintain proper dental care. Be sure to brush twice a day, floss regularly and visit your dentist as scheduled. In the event that you notice any tooth discoloration or gum issues once your braces have been removed, you will want to speak with your dentist as soon as possible to resolve the issue. Above all, remember to enjoy your new smile!
